Sometimes, language seems to be an insufficient tool to deliver the true message or emotion. Never thought, that the simple English word - “Irony” would itself catch its own language into being ironical.
How?
Here’s the example:
You are going to US to attend the funeral of your close relative and there you arrive at the airport and rush to stamp your visa for immigration.
US personnel would ask you one simple question!!
“What’s your purpose of visit – business or pleasure?”
Trapped!!! in words!! Try hard as much as you can, but you can’t escape the irony of words.
You can’t choose business, because obviously you are not going for a business trip. So left with only one option- pleasure!!
Immigration has reallocated your purpose of visit. This decisive question has made a very purposeful irony.
I can understand how your heart would feel, when caught in trap of words. Heart is sad because of the pain you going through on the behalf of your relative, but poor heart, it has to manage with the irony.
This purposeful irony cannot console the heart; instead, it creates an expression of guilt as it makes heart to purposefully utter a word –pleasure!!

Wait a sec!
ReplyDelete"Pleasure"???
Why not saying "business"? Business is a wide term, though attending a funeral isn't included in the word..
But why not choose it, atleast, it's bit better than "pleasure"...
Nice irony, though!
Did someone had to face this kinda irony??
Looking forward to see more on dilemmas and ironies, frm you...
Way to go Aditi!
Hi5!
@Bhavya: Business or Pleasure depends on the type of visa you have and clearly you wont be getting a business visa for such a trip!
ReplyDelete@Aditi: A very nicely written article. I really liked the way you ended it.
Haven't been thru immigration, so can't really tell! :-D
ReplyDeleteJokes apart, what i meant was, that saying "business" seems bit plausible than saying "pleasure"...
Okay, we all know, it depends on the visa...
So which visa will u like to have, kuber,
business or pleasure,
to goto a funeral?
I got it from your first post itself what you were trying to say! :)
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely like to get a business visa but unfortunately I'd be getting a tourist visa!
PS: I haven't been through immigration either! :D
There you go then! :-)
ReplyDeleteIt would have been really satisfying, if the word game played at the time of immigiration was easier and understanding!!!
ReplyDeleteI mean, I have full empathy to the players who have to play against business!!
