Media- a medley of ironies

These days what can we expect to see before switching on our television screens? Today when we watch news, movies, music or say any channel that has all kind of daily soaps running 24X7 on it, what do we see?
I have one answer for it- a medley of ironies.

Let’s cover the News channel first.
The most important part of our lives that connect us to the world, aware us with the important issues, tells us about all the happenings around us, which has this really big responsibility to share the news in its truer and pure form is none other than our news channels- an important side of the media.

But today what we do see over there?

Most of the times it’s the “entertainment” news which they telecast, whether its ash pregnancy issue  or which actress is more hot on screen or which serial is hitting the highest TRP’s or daily update of serials.

Story doesn’t here; off course they show news also, but how? Have a look then.
15th June 2011 midnight, world encountered century’s biggest lunar eclipse and I was shocked by their ironical opinions over this news that made me think - re think re-re think again about how media is responding towards its duty of enlightening the society.

At one side (the side which I too believe in), media was delivering the news stating:

“Watch lunar eclipse at midnight. It’s just a mere geographical phenomenon which has nothing to do with the lives we live. And all those astrology and rituals that people believe performing during eclipse is baseless. “
(To support it, they showed many clips of people who proved that what media just told was right. Like there was this couple who decided to marry on the day of lunar eclipse and their marriage has been a success.  And then there was another couple whose daughter was born on such a day and they said their life is so happy and their daughter is like their good luck charm)

But at the another side, media flipped the news stating:

“Let’s welcome the famous astrologer who will tell how this lunar eclipse will effect various ‘rashis’(zodiac signs)”
Now tell me, m I siting on my couch to watch this ironic take of media over this lunar eclipse?

Story doesn’t end here, watch now. Often news like this is shown – “see the cruelty of police, for no reason how police beat the women who were protesting? Unkind side of police”
Now, pause over here. They showing clipping of this whole incident and are they talking about cruelty?  Where the civic sense of media had gone when they were just standing over there and were busy recording? If they knew that it was inappropriate to beat those women then couldn’t they just stood up for them? Ironical behaviour!!

Not just this, why media is so ignorant about the real issues and problems our nations faces. Why not cover the slums, take interviews of the farmers, what agricultural problems they face today, one must not forgot that Indian farmers plays an important role in the growth of this nation, why not cover the interior of the country where many people don’t even have enough money to arrange three meals for a day and how government is doing nothing about inflation, how about counting number of schools in the villages rather than screening how much money a movie earns at the box office, why not show live about the present condition of hospitals in the towns and villages than having discussion with few politicians on an issue that never reaches a conclusion point….

Plenty of endless important stuff waits to get noticed than interviewing celebrities or showing which designer dress Angelina Jolie is wearing at cannes.

Coming over to the movies channel:
Ironic again!! Censor board assigns “A” certificate to the movies that are not meant to be viewed by the individuals below 18 in India. But how easily after few months that same movie with “A” certificate hits our small screens… how responsible attitude of media can be seen at this point.

Music and other channels:
Many or say almost all daily soaps are nothing but crap!! Very few serials exist that makes some sense. Otherwise, whatever these shows show, how much of it exist in real world? And are they helping the society? You actually think so? Instead they are ruining it.  Even the reality shows make no sense. Everything is pre – planned (then where is reality, ironic again) and every channel does all the possible ways to do anything and everything to increase the controversies of their so called reality shows thereby increasing the popularity and TRP’s…

Money minded media is now getting off its track. We want sensible news at this crucial time where nation is getting gripped into some series issues and media can do a great job by interviewing government over the issues and building a pressure for the good and betterment of the society.

Stop your bizarre news and give us some real news 24x7 than showing it off to mere prime timings.

Media- Hold up your responsibility before we give up all ours hopes over you and just stop watching your senseless news.
